Henderson House high quality supported living accommodation
From Superman to Super Homes – a new model for supported living
On 18th October 2019 we were delighted to host the official opening of Henderson House, our latest supported living project in Croydon. Henderson House is a block of 10 beautiful, self-contained apartments with a community space suitable for a range of activities and entertainment, with support staff on-site 24/7.
Sarah Jones MP
Shadow Housing Minister, Sarah Jones MP, lead the proceedings to support this unique partnership between Zetetick – a Unique Housing Charity, Croydon Council, FS Properties, and Frontier Support Services.
She said “I’m delighted to open this new development which will offer vulnerable residents in Croydon a safe, secure place to call home. Demand for supported housing is increasing, yet funding for this vital service has been severely cut since 2010, leaving some of our most vulnerable people at risk of homelessness. So it’s fantastic to see four local Croydon organisations collaborating to make Henderson House a reality.”
Henderson House supported living makes economic sense
The Henderson House model also makes good economic sense as shared costs make the most of limited funds available in the public sector. From the 1930s Henderson House was used to process films like Superman but it fell into disrepair – now it is first class accommodation for our tenants, allowing them to enjoy independent living in a supported environment.
One Henderson House tenant, Stephen, had spent years sleeping rough and ended up in a care home. He said “Now I’ve got my own place I make sure I buy nice stuff to cook with and I’ve got a lot more independence… My life has 100% changed… I haven’t got to worry about all my past and how it was… Here I have people to talk to at any time, even in the middle of the night if I wanted. Any time I’ve got a problem I can go to them.”
A success story for supported living
Croydon councillor Jane Avis said “This superb conversion provides top-quality homes for Croydon people with disabilities, boosting both their independence and the local supply of housing tailored to their needs. This is a great example of what a partnership with local companies and charities can achieve”.
