Liz Truss’ agenda is to cut tax as the way out of the cost-of-living crisis and the looming recession is a terrible approach. At a time when the country is facing its toughest economic pressures following Covid and the war in Ukraine, surely giving away our limited tax revenues to people, many who don’t need it, is simply the wrong agenda. At least Rishi Sunak is acting with his old ‘Chancellor’ hat on and making sensible prudent promises that may not be popular with conservative members, but that’s the role of the new Prime Minister – to make difficult choices that aren’t always popular but are in the best interest of the country.
Let’s stop trying to give away tax until we have truly earned it.
If we are talking about acting in the best interest, a phrase at the top of all charitable organisations agendas, let’s discuss the social care sector crisis and how new political policy from the Conservative leader candidates could benefit everyone – a win/win outcome. Generating growth in our sector through fair funding stimulates growth and allows the sector to pay better rates of pay to employees (help with cost of living as they earn more, not just the minimum wage), increases tax revenue for the Government (earn more, pay more tax) and most importantly protects and grows the services these organisation are able to deliver to the most vulnerable in society that unblocks NHS beds and returns associated cost savings to the exchequer or the underfunded NHS. Let’s stop trying to give away tax until we have truly earned it.
