In the heart of our service area, a high needs individual had spent far too long in hospital, waiting for the right home to become available. Sarah’s* story had already stretched for years, and she had endured what was one of the longest hospital stay in England. When she was first referred to Zetetick by one of our support providers, Venture People, a few years ago, the goal was clear: find a safe, supportive home where she could really belong and thrive. A home where her needs would be met with care and empathy.

Objectives and Obstacles

Sarah’s needs were complex; however, this did not stop Zetetick or Venture People.

While Zetetick’s values of determination and kindness  guided every step of the person centred search, the reality was that properties with these requirements were rare. The challenges weren’t just logistical; they were also about building open relationships with local letting agents and landlords, many of whom were unfamiliar with Zetetick’s mission of providing safe, secure homes.

Our Actions

Nevertheless, Zetetick’s commitment and communication never wavered. Frequent meetings with the team at Venture People took place, ensuring they were always updated and knew that the search remained a priority. It wasn’t just about finding any house; it was about finding the right one that would allow Sarah to live with the respect and dignity she deserved. Every visit, every meeting, every phone call reflected that commitment.

After over a year of searching, a breakthrough finally hit! Our team, along with Venture People and social workers visited the potential forever home. It was everything she needed and ticked all the vital boxes that others thought to be too difficult.

After Sarah visited the property and knew it was right for her, supported by Venture People, it was only a matter of weeks, and the tenancy was signed!  Sarah finally had a place to call home. Her long hospital stay was officially over, and a new chapter began.

Our Impact

This wasn’t just a victory for Zetetick, it was a triumph for everyone involved. The health and local authority teams, the support providers, Venture People, and the letting agents, and above all for Sarah, who all came together to make this happen. Each organisation played a vital role in ensuring she had the right space to live and thrive.

For Sarah, most importantly, it meant the end of a drawn-out chapter of her life, one spent in settings for a place to call home. It meant freedom, stability, and the chance to live independently, with the support she needs close by.

Sarah has since thrived in her new home after working with Venture People.

Sarah’s journey wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t fast. But through persistence, collaboration, and a deep commitment to her wellbeing, Zetetick found the right property: one that not only met her complex needs but gave her the stability she so desperately needed.

This case is a testament to the power of teamwork and determination in the face of significant challenges and how Zetetick will do everything in their power to find forever homes for all.
